Zohran Mamdani states he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans right away following his victory in November.
"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he hails from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his modest Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
