This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the character of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
