This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that arise in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
