The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes established him as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
