Eurovision Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
A freshly coined term surfaced a couple of months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors such as child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for physicians to care for a young patient who has seen the death of their complete family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in scores of doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that violations are continuing. Authorities disputes these allegations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is accused of. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.
The contest, notably prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
A Double Standard
Forget the fact that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A competition that initially championed harmony has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
