Both Deceased Students Revealed in the Providence Campus Incident as Authorities Press On With Hunt for Gunman.
Both young individuals who died in Saturday’s mass shooting at Brown University were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their shooter persisted following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual of interest in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, as stated by the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.
She served as vice-president of Brown’s branch of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also expressed condolences publicly, stating: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”
An International Student
The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the prestigious university, family members said.
The victim's identification was verified by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.
The Shooting Incident
Nine more persons were injured in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 detained in a police operation at a lodging about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you must reassess and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”
Ongoing Concerns
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “We know that this is likely to cause renewed concern for our community”.
The gunman opened fire inside a lecture hall in the engineering facility on over the weekend, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a police source reported to the media outlet.
Police that entered the lodging seized two firearms and two loaded 30-round magazines when the individual was arrested, the news agency reported.
Condition of the Injured
Among those wounded, one student was allowed to go home, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.
An educational institution, a private academy in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.
More Condolences
Cook was honored at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”
Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “She was famed for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.
Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to his relatives, loved ones, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his promising future.”
Wider Picture
The fatal shooting at Brown, the country's seventh most historic higher education institution with about thousands of bachelor's and three thousand graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in the current year, according to records. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
