Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
