A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
